The franchise, once introduced as Sialkot Stallionz, has officially been rebranded as Multan Sultans following a majority takeover by CD Ventures ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11.

The announcement came during a joint press conference in Lahore, where Salman Naseer confirmed the change. Franchise owner Hamza Majeed and CD Ventures chief Gohar Shah were also present.

CD Ventures has acquired a majority stake in the franchise, which was originally purchased by OZ Developers for Rs 1.85 billion during January’s PSL auction.

While the exact percentage has not been officially disclosed, multiple reports suggest that Gohar Shah now controls around 98 per cent of ownership, with Majeed gradually stepping aside.

More importantly, the franchise’s valuation has reportedly climbed to Rs 2 billion annually. That is not just a business update. It signals confidence in the league’s growth.

Why the Return of Multan Sultans Matters?

As soon as Gohar Shah took charge as CEO, he requested a name change. The request was approved. So, Sialkot Stallionz are now Multan Sultans.

For Shah, this was personal. He made it clear that retaining the Multan identity was important to him. In his own colourful words, “A stallion alone cannot win the PSL. To move forward, a stallion needs a sultan, and we have come as Sultans.”

It is hard to ignore the symbolism. Multan has a passionate cricket following, particularly across South Punjab. Bringing back the Sultans’ name feels like a strategic move to reconnect with that base.

Interestingly, Shah previously attempted to buy the Multan franchise but was outbid when Walee Technologies secured it for Rs 2.45 billion and rebranded it as Pindiz. Now, in a twist of fate, he has acquired another franchise and revived the Multan identity himself.

What About the Fans?

Naturally, Sialkot supporters might feel blindsided. After all, the Stallionz identity had only just been introduced. However, Majeed was quick to reassure fans.

He promised that elements of the Stallionz branding would remain visible throughout the campaign. Furthermore, he confirmed that transport arrangements would be made for Sialkot fans to attend Multan Sultans matches.

That gesture could help soften the blow. In franchise cricket, loyalty often attaches to players and cities. Balancing both will be crucial.
