2018
In April 2017, after the second Pakistan Super League (PSL), a sixth team was added. Two months later, Schon Properties acquired the franchise for an eight-year contract and named it Multan Sultans, with Wasim Akram as the director of cricket. Led by T20 great Shoaib Malik, the team won their first game but ultimately finished fifth, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
2019-2020
A Tricky Phase
Before the 2019 season, the Sultans faced major changes. Schon Properties failed to pay the franchise fee, losing their contract. Alamgir Khan Tareen and Ali Khan Tareen took over as new owners. Wasim Akram switched franchises, and head coach Tom Moody missed the tournament due to scheduling conflicts. The team struggled, finishing fifth and winning only three of their ten games.
2020-2021
The Start of Something Special
With the Sultans under pressure, major changes were made: Andy Flower was appointed head coach for PSL 5, Shan Masood became captain, and Haider Azhar was promoted. These moves paid off as the Sultans topped the group stages. Despite losing both playoff matches, they set a strong foundation for the future.
2021-2024
The Golden Period (2021 – Present)
In the sixth PSL edition, Muhammad Rizwan led the Sultans to second place in the group stage and victory in the final, with standout performances from Shahnawaz Dahani and Sohaib Maqsood. The next season, they dominated the group stage but lost to Lahore Qalandars in the final. Rizwan was named wicketkeeper and player of the tournament. In the following season, they again lost narrowly to Lahore in the final, with Abbas Afridi, Ihsanullah, and Rizwan earning top awards.
2024
An Emotional Rollercoaster
In the ninth PSL edition, Ali Khan Tareen led the team after Alamgir Khan Tareen’s passing, aiming to maintain their winning streak. Key changes included Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Wasim replacing Andy Flower and Haider Azhar, and Hijab Zahid becoming the first female General Manager in South Asian sports. The team excelled, reaching their fourth consecutive final but lost to Islamabad United in a thrilling finish, despite Iftikhar Ahmed’s late heroics.
